Crumbling curricula (www.khaleejtimes.com)
27 June 2006
  • AS I read the top story on children sliding into depression (KT, June 25), I wasn’t in the least surprised because we already have curricula to orchestrate this kind of stressful development.Unless we make a real effort to revamp educational systems, even parents must live on the edge.Excessive focus on academics as against declining moral conditioning is to blame.Teachers must complete huge portions in too little time, students need to constantly perform and ‘prove’ and parents share in the anxiety. Children need schooling to develop as whole individuals who can contribute their share to the world.Somewhere along the way, however, we have lost the whole concept, triggering a crazy rat race. Children should enjoy going to school and only when such a day arrives will education triumph.

Quota system in Indian varsities
6 June 2006
  • MANY articles about reservations in Indian universities have been printed in newspapers, and captured the attention of layman. I am for reservation because it has a humanitarian idea of bringing inequality towards equality. I believe affirmative action is required if we need to uplift the weaker sections of society. Reservations should start at the base level so that there is ample time to mould the individual to compete at a higher levels, and in that way, efficiency and merit is not compromised. We have to give chance to the weaker members of society. To do that, the best way is go to the roots and try to make it stronger, so that the tree is strong to withstand the storms of life. So in toto, a common goal to bring equality should be the motto of humanity.

I completely agree with you. It is
opportunity, exposure and access to resources that help
mould a person in whatever profession he/she wants to
excel in.Being intelligent is not a birthright. Every
person is endowed with certain abilities. Tapping them
is what a nation should be aiming at and what India is
doing is her duty towards its most disadvantaged
    population.
Like you suggest, this has to be done as early as
possible which would leave no room for bitterness
    later on.

    RESERVATION for rich is justified????

hi friends.....there is a hue & cry about reservation for OBC through out the country and now in USA too. I am surprised no one has pointed out the reservation being extended to rich class in terms of i) payment seats ii) NRI quota iii) manangment seats. All this comes to a total of about 30% of the total seats in colleges in India. Why the govt. should not scrap the reservation to rich people .....let them compete too..... there can't bedouble standards. Why reservation for NRI's ??? . Another point is that admission to all these seats is carried out with out any written examination...just pay money & get seat.

education system is certainly a major factor but me myself being a student and an mbbs aspirant can say for sure that the peer pressure is the biggest culprit.....although frnds r most of the time really supportive ,the distant uncles and aunts never cease to draw comparisons ,perhaps if the parents and us students stop bothering ''wat the nieghbours wud think'' the stress level will go down manifolds

trial it''s a national disgrace that we do not know what and how to teach our kids.when their impressionable minds are to be nurtured and cared we give them hamal training.no doubt the 100 crores could not produce a single olympic champion.it''s unimaginable that our academicians who formulate the curriculum are so stupid.also when most of the govt and pvt offices are closed even LP students are made to study on saturday.it''s the biggest bulshit, the indian education system(?)

I think when we talk about the stress at schooling, it has relevance with the update coming from our workplace too. The innovation which is adding in our day to day life has a impact on present education system. The expectation now in industry is to get trained ones not the trainees and this is gradually changing the education system in the country. The stress to compete was there earlier too but now this competition has another added input and that input is consistent performance to compete. The competition is not now in between aspirants but social too where parents has to come accross very often. The social system and unstructured educational planning to guide student to relevant career is absent . The major player of todays competition is not the aspiration of the child but its parents, peers and the society decided.
